Summer Fun

Updated: Oct 7

We may not be logging a bunch of training miles during the summer months but the dogs still need regular exercise and enrichment. We mainly do this with a lot of “swamp walks” and loose time around the homestead.

At HTK we seem to be cultivators of controlled chaos. It’s really fun to let all 24 dogs loose and head into the swamp behind our house for a long walk. Peppa the pig really likes to join us for these walks and we are always amazed at how well she navigates the swamp. she’s an adventure pig that can squirm over down trees and scale banks! When she hits a patch of bog that’s too soft for her stabby little pig feet she just turns herself around and makes her way back home. We have not lost her yet! (Except for that one time she went for a neighborhood walk about….).

If we do not have time for a long swamp walk we will “survey the kingdom” and take a perimeter loop of the property. Peppa in tow of course. This loose time lets them run full speed, jump over trees, navigate different terrains and work on their balance/coordination. It’s also great team bonding as they chase each other, steal toys/bones and figure out who gets along best with who.

Have you ever gone on a walk in the woods with 25+ loose dogs and a pig? It’s pretty fun and something everyone should experience at least once! So if/when you make your way to Fairbanks come join the HTK crew for some controlled chaos!

Typical summer swamp walk with the crew!
